Eve - Anna Carey

Eve (Eve, #1) Serie: Eve #1
Release date: 2011
Stars: 2/5

The year is 2032, sixteen years after a deadly virus—and the vaccine intended to protect against it—wiped out most of the earth’s population. The night before eighteen-year-old Eve’s graduation from her all-girls school she discovers what really happens to new graduates, and the horrifying fate that awaits her.

Fleeing the only home she’s ever known, Eve sets off on a long, treacherous journey, searching for a place she can survive. Along the way she encounters Caleb, a rough, rebellious boy living in the wild. Separated from men her whole life, Eve has been taught to fear them, but Caleb slowly wins her trust...and her heart. He promises to protect her, but when soldiers begin hunting them, Eve must choose between true love and her life.

It's kind of a disturbing story. First of all, the world building is kind of bad. I found it hard to believe that America could sink so low after just 16 years. I'm still not sure what kind of world it is that Eve lived it. Sure there was a plaque and that wiped most of the humans out and then they have to repopulate the world. The girls learn that man are bad and they have to stay in school. So that's where Eve is, almost 18 and ready for graduating. But then she finds out, that after graduating she can't be anything she wants to be. No! There is a horrifying fate waiting for her. So she escapes. I didn't like Eve at all. She's so shallow and really she ought to be smart (she was the smartest at school), but I didn't see it. For example, she thinks a baby bear looks like Winnie the Pooh. My god girl! And then all the hesitation, should I go with Caleb, should I do did, that? Then the part where she almost got raped and Caleb walks in on it and asks her if she liked the guy? She hesitates and then says I don't know. What that fuck was that? Can't she just tell, I was seconds away from being raped! Make up your mind girl! Like I said, she's almost 18, but it really looked like she was 12. She didn't know anything, she hung on Arden like that was her mother or something. Then ofcourse there is this hero guy Caleb. I have to say, I did like Caleb! He's not the over protective one. He's just a sweet guy, who really likes Eve. He's just saying everything how it is. Like when Caleb doesn't want Eve to go somewhere he just says it, but lets her make the decision. What I also liked in the book was the writing style. While the world building was lacking, the details of some scenes where beautifully written. It was an easy read! And then the ending, I hated it. I don't recommened the book and I'm sure as hell not going to read the next one.

City of Lost Souls - Cassandra Clare

City of Lost Souls (The Mortal Instruments, #5)
Series: The Mortal Instruments #5
Release date: 2012
Stars: 4/5

What price is too high to pay, even for love?

When Jace and Clary meet again, Clary is horrified to discover that the demon Lilith’s magic has bound her beloved Jace together with her evil brother Sebastian, and that Jace has become a servant of evil. The Clave is out to destroy Sebastian, but there is no way to harm one boy without destroying the other. As Alec, Magnus, Simon, and Isabelle wheedle and bargain with Seelies, demons, and the merciless Iron Sisters to try to save Jace, Clary plays a dangerous game of her own. The price of losing is not just her own life, but Jace’s soul. She’s willing to do anything for Jace, but can she still trust him? Or is he truly lost?

Love. Blood. Betrayal. Revenge. Darkness threatens to claim the Shadowhunters in the harrowing fifth book of the Mortal Instruments series.

Finally the series contains City of Lost Souls. This book is much better than the last two. While the last two books I found myself skimming parts just to get over with it. With this installment, I found myself really wanting to keep reading. The only thing I found very annoying is the main character, Clary. She keept wining about losing Jace. And I get that, but really it took way too long. And that makes her age also an issue, because her 16 years doens't make it very believable. Lost Souls had much more meaningfull actions, scenes, conversations etc than the other books. Even though the book is a very long one, it never once stopped me for wanting more. I really liked in The Mortal Instruments, but especially in this book that there are so many characters you fall in love with. Like I said before, they all have that one something that makes them unique and loving and caring. I really like Isabelle and Simon, they are great together. I like how Clare writes about them, how difficult it is for both of them to start a relationship and how Clare not makes it a instant love, everything is great thing. I really like the gay couple Alec/Magnus, they bring the humor in the book, but Alec also add a very serious aspect. Overall, Lost Souls is a great improvement over Fallen Angels. I'm really looking forward to the last book in the series and ofcourse the movies!

City of Fallen Angels - Cassandra Clare

City of Fallen Angels (The Mortal Instruments, #4)Series: The Mortal Instruments #4
Release date: 2011
Stars: 3/5

The Mortal War is over, and sixteen-year-old Clary Fray is back home in New York, excited about all the possibilities before her. She's training to become a Shadowhunter and to use her unique power. Her mother is getting married to the love of her life. Downworlders and Shadowhunters are at peace at last. And - most importantly of all - she can finally call Jace her boyfriend.

But nothing comes without a price. Someone is murdering Shadowhunters who used to be in Valentine's Circle, provoking tensions between Downworlders and Shadowhunters that could lead to a second bloody war. Clary's best friend, Simon, can't help her. His mother just found out that he's a vampire and now he's homeless. Everywhere he turns, someone wants him on their side - along with the power of the curse that's wrecking his life. And they're willing to do anything to get what they want. At the same time he's dating two beautiful, dangerous girls - neither of whom knows about the other one.

When Jace begins to pull away from Clary without explaining why, she is forced to delve into the heart of a mystery whose solution reveals her worst nightmare: She herself has set in motion a terrible chain of events that could lead to her losing everything she loves. Even Jace.

After the disappointment of City of Glass, I hoped that City of Fallen Angels turned out to be better. It wasn't much better. I mean I still like the series and the plot and everything is okay. The world of the shadowhunters is very good and unique and I really liked it, but I think this is an example of a series what should've ended sooner. It keeps dragging on. In the beginning of City of Fallen Angels everything is good. The war is over, Clary and Jace can be together. Simon has kind of accepted everything. Her mother is okay and marrying Luke. But than, suprise! Someone is spoiling everything and killing along his way. With Simon everything turns out to be bad. Jace isn't a great boyfriend anymore. Everything is falling apart. And who is the cause? It's kind of predictable and yet I keep reading the series, because the writing style is great. The characters are nice and the plot is okay. I really am curious to see how the movies are turning out to be! I still think the first two books are the better ones in The Mortal Instruments.

City of Glass - Cassandra Clare

City of Glass (The Mortal Instruments, #3)
Serie: The Mortal Instruments #3
Release date: 2009
Stars: 3/5

To save her mother's life, Clary must travel to the City of Glass, the ancestral home of the Shadowhunters - never mind that entering the city without permission is against the Law, and breaking the Law could mean death. To make things worse, she learns that Jace does not want her there, and Simon has been thrown in prison by the Shadowhunters, who are deeply suspicious of a vampire who can withstand sunlight.

As Clary uncovers more about her family's past, she finds an ally in mysterious Shadowhunter Sebastian. With Valentine mustering the full force of his power to destroy all Shadowhunters forever, their only chance to defeat him is to fight alongside their eternal enemies. But can Downworlders and Shadowhunters put aside their hatred to work together? While Jace realizes exactly how much he's willing to risk for Clary, can she harness her newfound powers to help save the Glass City - whatever the cost?

So I really really liked that first and the second book in The Mortal Instruments series. I'm a bit dissappointed with City of Glass. In the last book, Clary and Jace got the know the truth and couldn't be with eachother the way the would. That sucked big time and it was a really sad part. On top of that her mother was in coma, Simon turned into a vampire. I started to wonder if there was anything else that could go wrong. Well obviously that turned out to be a BIG YES. In City of Glass everyone is going to the City of Glass, the home of the shadowhunters. Save Clary's mom, stop the evil and all that. So what goes wrong? Well Jace doesn't want Clary to go, because it's to dangerous and all that. It's just to much drama in this book. I liked it, I mean how can someone not like Clary's story and the world of the shadowhunters? There is a lot of action and it starts early. There are a lot of twists and turns and I liked that. I really thought that in City of Glass everything was very predictable. I mean I saw what the third Motal Instrument was ways ahead of Clary. And the end wasn't a big suprise for me, while it should be a great big satisfying conclusion. I'm curious to see what the fourth book is turning out to be.

City of Ashes - Cassandra Clare

City of Ashes (The Mortal Instruments, #2)
Serie: The Mortal Instruments #2
Release date: 2008
Stars: 4/5

Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what's normal when you're a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who's becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn't ready to let her go — especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary's only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil — and also her father.

To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings — and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?

Okay, so after reading City of Bones we now know more about Clary, Jace and the shadowhunter's world. Also we learned about the evil one, Valentine, who happens to be her father. Wow this second book was really something. Clary's know that the most evil person in her world is her one father and then the one she loves turns against her and she can't be with Jace. It's a very difficult time for Clary in this book. I really loved to read how Clary struggles with everything and how unfair life can be for her. The tension in the book is really alive and I felt it. There are so many characters, but they all have some unique character that makes them so great and loyal. You get to know a lot of the characters more. The plot is also very interesting. What is the evil plan of Valentine? What does he wants to do with the mortal instruments? There is a lot of actions and drama scenes, but also humor and love. You get to know a lot more about Jace and his familie and there is some really dramatic events unfolding in City of Ashes. I really liked the second book better than the first.

City of Bones - Cassandra Clare

City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1)
Series: The Mortal Instruments #1
Release date: 2007
Stars: 4/5

When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder -- much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing -- not even a smear of blood -- to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know. . . .

After reading all the good reviews of Cassandra Clare series and really she just kept popping up everywhere, so I decided to start with her Mortal Instruments series. I mean the cover really wasn't doin' it for me! So City of Bones was the first book I read about her, and I have to give it to her, it really is a great book. I have to think a bit what this book was about, because I liked the serie so much I read it in a few days. What I liked most about the book is the world Cassandra created. The world of the shadowhunters is unique and very interesting. Shadowhunters are half angel and half people. The story is full of actions and you get to now more about the beautifull and twisting full world of the shadowhunters. There are werewolves and vampires in the story also, but the author's take on is different than I encountered before. Some parts were a bit predictable, but I didn't mind it at all. The main character Clary, I liked her very much. Could easily relate to her. She remains very strong throughout the book, even though there were a lot of shocking moments for her. What I didn't understand is that Clary is supposed to be only 15 years. I can't really relate to that, but maybe that's just me. So ofcourse there has to be a boy in the book and that is Jace. He's really something. Strong to the outside, but he can be soft on the inside. When I finished this one, I immidiately picked up the second book. I highly recommened the series! Oh and what I'm really looking forward to is that they are making a movie of the series!! How cool is that?!

Exiled - RaShelle Workman

Exiled (Immortal Essence, #1)
Serie: Immortal Essence #1
Release date: 2011
Stars: 3/5

Worlds divided them. Chance brought them together. Only love will save them.

An alien princess exiled to Earth.
An arrogant boy.
One week to get back to her planet or she'll die.
And, her only chance for survival? She must help the boy find his soul mate.
Piece of cake!

Stubborn, sixteen-year-old Princess Venus of Kelari wants one thing, to become immortal, that is, until someone exiles her to Earth, kills her irrihunter and takes her family.

Now she wants revenge. First she’s got to get home. But before she can return to Kelari, the Gods have commanded her to help an arrogant boy named Michael find his soul mate.
Only she doesn't know the first thing about love.

Rather quickly, her inexperience with human emotion is obscured by other matters--alien-controlled psychotic teens that are out to kill her, and a government group that is set on capturing and dissecting her. Worst of all, Venus will suffer a painful death-by-poisoning, thanks to Earth’s atmosphere, if she remains on the planet longer than one week. Still, Venus is a Princess and she's got a plan. Surely, with her help, Michael will fall in love with a human.

But time is running out and Michael is falling for the wrong girl--her.

I really really don't know how to feel about this book! I mean, the cover is just sooo gorgeous. And it seems like a really good story. Don't get me wrong, I don't mean that it's a bad story. It was just... weird. After Jennifer Armentrout made the alien race look like a 'hot' race I decided to pick this book about aliens up. The descriptions in the book are very well done. I mean I could get a very good picture of Kelari, what the alien race looked like and the landscape and everything. So it started out good. You get to meet Venus, the main character. Venus is an interesting character, who lacks emotions on her planet. When she gets exiled to Earth she comes in contact with the human emotions and reacts strongly to that. I really liked that Zaren had to teach her the difference between physical reactions to boys and the development of deeper feelings. You get to see her stumple with the human emotions and I really liked to see where things where going. So her big project was Michael. I didn't like him, he was very shallow. I really couldn't relate with him and didn't understand him. The love that was developing between Michael and Venus was beyond me. The thing that was most disturbing where the switching of PoVs. It seemed kind of pointless the different PoVs. Venus was much more interesting than the rest. The chapters where kind of weird to, it seemed very random when a chapter started or ended. Now it looks like I didn't enjoy the book, but I did. The story itself was very unique and interesting. RaShelle makes the alien race totally different and everything about it was very interesting. I really hope the second book in this series is going to be better with the characters and the chapters.

Winter's Shadow - M.J. Hearle

Winter's Shadow (Winter Saga, #1)
Serie: Winter Saga #1
Release date: 2011
Stars: 4/5

Blake Duchamp...

He's all that Winter Adams can think of. Ever since their fateful meeting at Pilgrim's Lament. Ever since he looked at her with those emerald eyes. Ever since he saved her life.

But Blake isn't all that he seems. There is a strangeness about him, something dark and otherworldly. Something dangerous. In his attic is a secret he would kill to defend, but Winter seems to have a special ability to make him forget his duty. And he is her only protection against the gathering darkness.

The only problem is, to protect Winter, Blake must risk exposing her to an even greater danger. Himself.

I've waited a very long time for this one and finally I got this book! The cover is just stunning! It's the first young adult paranormal romance book that I've read that's been written by a man. I only found out at the end of the story that is was written by a man!! It starts out familiar. There is a dark brooding hero and a girl with a sad past. And ofcourse they are drawn to each other. The romantic hero has a secret and must keep the girl away from him, just to keep her safe. But.. thinks get very interesting in this book. The main character Winter is a very nice girl and your typical shy girl. She lost her parent in a tragic accident. She has insecurties about her looks and likes to be invisible. I liked that she was so self aware. She knew her faults and recognizes other's faults. She meets Blake, the dark romantic hero. He's mysterious and I really wanted to know what his secret was! I liked the fact that there where glimpses into someone's past. I really liked reading about Madeleine and her love, it was very unique. Where things got an interesting turn, was when the cats showed up. Picture an garden full and full of cats. I really liked the aspect of cats as guardians. The ending took a great twist and I really want to read the next book in the series!
